Challenge Áskorunin

Mosfellsbær runs its services, its administration and a busy calendar of town life through one website. Residents come to it to apply for services, check waste collection or pool hours, read council minutes and follow what is happening in town.

For the 2025 relaunch the town had a design system from Kolofon. Our job was to turn it into a working website: design the pages and templates from its parts, and build it. The site had to hold a large amount of structured content, from forms and requests to rules, bylaws and years of news, and still let a resident find the one thing they came for in a few steps.

A desktop browser view of the Mosfellsbær website on a green background. The header shows the logo, menu items Íbúar, Stjórnsýsla and Mannlíf, a "Mínar síður" button and a search icon. Below the heading "Þróunarverkefni" and a breadcrumb trail sit two cards with aerial photographs of a sports centre and a residential area, labelled below each image.

Approach Nálgunin

The navigation is three words: Íbúar, Stjórnsýsla, Mannlíf (residents, administration, community life). Each opens a full menu of its section. The homepage leads with one story, then quick links to the tasks people come for most, then news, notices, events and meeting minutes, each with a link to its full archive.

Forms, rules and bylaws, events and projects are their own content types, so each is listed, filtered and linked the same way wherever it appears. Kolofon’s system sets the tone: GT Ultra Median for headings, Theinhardt for text, on a green and white base. In the build, long Icelandic headings break at syllables rather than mid-word.

Three cards sit side by side: an aerial view of green fields and coastal wetland, four smiling people walking down a supermarket aisle with one holding a folder, and children in pink outfits on bicycles. Each carries a September 2026 date, a headline, and circular arrow buttons below.A phone screen showing the Mosfellsbær website, with a triangular knot logo, menu links for Íbúar, Stjórnsýsla and Mannlíf, and green account and search buttons. The heading "Þróunarverkefni" sits below, followed by a breadcrumb trail. Further down, an aerial photo shows a swimming pool, a sports hall and car parks above a project title.

Five phone screenshots overlap side by side on a green background. The front one shows a Mosfellsbær news item with cyclists in pink outfits and the heading "Íbúar ánægðir með Í túninu heima". Others display an artworks page with contents list, a development projects page with an aerial photo, a dated meeting minutes table, and footer contact details.

Right, six colour swatches named Ink, Green, Pine, Sun, Mint and White carry hex codes. A white card below shows green buttons, the site's navigation with Íbúar, Stjórnsýsla and Mannlíf, and a news card with an aerial photo.

Outcome Niðurstaðan

Mosfellsbær now keeps 190 pages, 142 forms and requests, 90 rules and bylaws and more than 2,600 news items in one structure, with every service one menu away from the homepage.

The same layout carries every page from a phone to a desktop screen.

The Mosfellsbær homepage appears on a desktop screen with tablet and phone renderings overlapping it against a green background. A navigation bar carries Íbúar, Stjórnsýsla and Mannlíf plus a login button and search icon. The headline "Íbúar ánægðir með Í túninu heima" sits beside a photo of people in pink outfits with bicycles. Shortcut links and a notice bar follow.
