Challenge Áskorunin

Hafnarfjörður is Iceland’s third largest town, and its website is where residents look up everything from school places and pool hours to waste collection, planning and council minutes. The town’s web department and Metall Design Studio designed a new site around one promise: warm, dependable and smart service.

Our job was to build it, on WordPress, so that a very large body of content stays easy to find and easy for the town’s own staff to keep up to date.

A lighthouse logo sits beside menu items for Þjónusta, Mannlíf, Framkvæmdir and Stjórnsýsla, with a user login button, language selector and search. Below the heading "Sundlaugar" and breadcrumbs, three cards show pool photographs with addresses, phone numbers, email and opening hours.

Approach Nálgunin

The homepage opens with search and a row of quick links to the tasks people come for most, such as pools, waste collection, jobs, pre-schools and invoice payment. Below them sit what’s on next, then news and notices and a calendar of events, each with its own filters.

Behind the four main sections, services, community, projects and administration, a large menu groups every service by topic. Each page follows the same templates, so a page about pool opening hours works the same way as one about child protection.

Forsíðan byrjar á leit og röð flýtitengla í þá þjónustu sem fólk leitar oftast að, svo sem sundlaugar, sorphirðu, laus störf, leikskóla og reikningagátt. Þar fyrir neðan kemur næst á döfinni, síðan fréttir og tilkynningar og viðburðadagatal, hvert með sínum síum.

Á bak við fjóra meginhluta vefsins, þjónustu, mannlíf, framkvæmdir og stjórnsýslu, flokkar stór valmynd alla þjónustu eftir efni. Allar síður byggja á sömu sníðmátum, svo síða um opnunartíma sundlauga virkar eins og síða um barnavernd.

A teal date block reads 1–30 sep beside the title Hamingjudagar í Hafnarfirði 2026, a short description, a location marker and a read-more button. A Viðburðir button appears at the bottom.A phone screen on a pale blue background displays the Sundlaugar page of the Hafnarfjörður website. A lighthouse mark, search icon and menu button sit at the top, followed by a blue heading and a breadcrumb trail. An audio player precedes a short intro, then a photo of an indoor pool with lane ropes and contact details for Ásvallalaug.

What’s on next, on desktop, and the swimming pools page on a phone.

Four phone screens sit side by side on a blue background. At left, Hafnarfjörður's service overview lists categories such as Velferð and Skólar og börn. Next, a swimming pool page shows a pool photo and contact details for Ásvallalaug. In front, the home screen has a bird illustration, search field and topic tags, with a dark blue footer behind.

At right sit six colour swatches labelled Ink, Harbour, Orange, Night, Sky and White with hex codes. Below, a white panel gathers Hafnarfjörður homepage components: a news card, an event card and the lighthouse navigation bar.

Outcome Niðurstaðan

The site now holds 243 pages and more than 4,500 news items and notices published since 2015, in one structure that the town’s staff run themselves.

It works in Icelandic and English, and the same templates carry every page from a phone to a desktop screen.

Hafnarfjörður's homepage displayed across three overlapping screens on a blue background. The desktop view shows a lighthouse mark, a menu, the heading "Hlýleg, áreiðanleg og snjöll þjónusta", a search field, line illustrations of a harbour town and rows of quick links such as Sundlaugar and Leikskólar. Phone and tablet views repeat these with a bird illustration and an events listing.
