Challenge Áskorunin

Elliðaárstöð is the old hydroelectric station in Elliðaárdalur. Orkuveitan runs it as a place where energy, nature and history meet in the middle of Reykjavík. It draws families, walkers, school groups and anyone curious about where the city’s water and power come from.

The website had to serve all of them: plan a visit, find a trail, bring a class, read the history or see what is on. It also had to work for visitors who do not read Icelandic.

Elliðaárstöð er gamla rafstöðin í Elliðaárdal. Orkuveitan rekur hana sem stað þar sem orka, náttúra og saga mætast í hjarta borgarinnar. Þangað koma fjölskyldur, göngufólk, skólahópar og allir sem vilja vita hvaðan vatnið og rafmagnið í borginni koma.

Vefurinn þurfti að þjóna þeim öllum: að skipuleggja heimsókn, finna gönguleið, koma með bekk, lesa söguna eða sjá hvað er á döfinni. Hann þurfti líka að nýtast gestum sem lesa ekki íslensku.

Desktop view of Elliðaárstöð's "Komdu í heimsókn" page on a yellow background. The white header shows the logo, menu links, language toggle, search and a yellow map icon. A bold headline and short intro sit left; right, a photo of children reaching up into bare branches hung with orange paper shapes. Turquoise diagonal stripes run below.

Approach Nálgunin

The design takes its cue from the station itself: bold L15 headings, open white space and diagonal stripes, like safety markings, framing every photograph. Each part of the homepage has its own colour, orange for visiting, blue for learning, coral for the station and yellow for news and the café, and the colour carries through to its button.

At the centre is an interactive map of Elliðaárdalur. Places are sorted into nine categories, from energy and resources to walking and running routes, history, wildlife and geology, and each category can be switched on or off. We built the site on WordPress, in Icelandic, English and Polish.

A tight crop of the Elliðaárstöð homepage on desktop, showing a white card floating on a pale grey background with a soft drop shadow. The bold black heading reads "Komdu í heimsókn", followed by a short four-line paragraph and an orange button. At the right edge, a photograph shows trees, grass and a paved path.A phone screen on a pale grey backdrop shows part of the Elliðaárstöð homepage. The heading reads “Margt að sjá í Dalnum”, followed by two short paragraphs and a bright yellow button labelled “Skoða kort”. Below it, a Google map of the Elliðaár valley displays a dense cluster of coloured pins near Árbæjarsafn, with Árbæjarlaug and Mjóddin also labelled.

Four phone screenshots overlap at different depths on a yellow background. The front screen shows an aerial photo of a red-roofed building above the heading "Velkomin í Elliðaárstöð" and body text. Behind it sit a "Komdu í heimsókn" page with the site logo, a "Fréttir" news list, and a map dotted with coloured pins under "Margt að sjá í Dalnum".

At right, seven swatches are labelled Ink, Paper, Yellow, Orange, Blue, Coral and Grey with hex codes. Outcome Niðurstaðan

Elliðaárstöð now has one place for everything a visit involves: how to get there, what to see, what to teach and what is new. The map puts 58 places in the valley on one screen.

The same pages work on a phone out on the trail and on a screen in a classroom.

The desktop view carries a top menu with links, language toggle, search and map icons, the heading "Velkomin í Elliðaárstöð", several short paragraphs and a black button. Beside it, an aerial photo of the red-roofed station among trees sits behind yellow diagonal stripes, repeated on tablet and phone.
